We pledge to provide a truly sustainable biodegradable pot.
Made by Farmers, For Growers – our commitment to you
Thank you for considering our biodegradable pots for your home, garden and business.
We have been manufacturing biodegradable pots on our farm since 2005. Using our family’s own farm market and garden center for first hand experience, we quickly realized the horticultural benefits of growing in compostable containers. We have transitioned nearly all of our herbs, vegetables and a mix of bedding annuals away from plastic pots and into CowPots. Our customers appreciate having a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative for their garden. Our customers prefer CowPots over peat pots and plastic pots because of the superior root penetration and reduced transplant shock.
Important information about ordering CowPots:
Shipping Costs Too High?
We are located in Connecticut, and the cost of shipping to the Midwest and West Coast can be expensive. Consider purchasing from one of our distributors to save on shipping.
Only need a few pots?
Our online store offers wholesale & resale case options of the best biodegradable pots.
If you are looking for smaller quantities of biodegradable pots, visit one of our online retailers or consider visiting your local home and garden store.
Why choose Biodegradable Pots?
Value added byproduct
CowPots are the invention of necessity. A dairy farmer had an abundance of manure and invented a solution to form biodegradable, plantable containers from this byproduct.
100% Biodegradable
CowPots are designed to break down in a single growing season. There are a lot of benefits to adding composted cow manure to your garden, including the fact that it attracts worms and microorganisms that deliver nutrients to your plants.
Minimal root disruption
Roots grow right through the pot wall. When it’s time to transplant, you don’t need to disturb the root base. Just place the whole pot in the ground and the roots will continue to flourish. This dramatically reduces transplant shock.
Eco-friendly
There’s literally nothing to throw away when you grow in CowPots. The entire pot is planted and adds value to your garden. There’s no plastic or waste to dispose of.
Quick and easy seedling transplanting
From seed starting to transplanting seedlings, CowPots are suited for each stage of your plants’ development. Stepping up a plant into a CowPot or planting into your garden, it’s so simple. Place the whole pot in the soil, completely covered. No need to crush or tear.
Renewable and Recycled
The raw material to make CowPots is composted cow manure. The cows on our farm are providing this resource 365 days/year. And before we form the manure into a CowPot, we capture renewable energy using a methane digester. The manure provides the energy to heat our house. Renewable and recycled.
Biodegradable Pots – Frequently Asked Questions
How do biodegradable pots work?
CowPots are made of natural materials: composted cow manure blended with a small amount of recycled newspaper and cardboard. The pots are formed by weaving these fibers together. As the plant develops, and the pot is exposed to growing conditions of being watered regularly, the fibers become weaker with time. Once planted in the ground, the microorganisms in the soil help break down the pot. Our products are all USDA Certified 100% Biobased.
Can you plant biodegradable pots into the ground?
Not all biodegradable pots are equal. This is what makes CowPots stand apart from competing bio containers. CowPots do not need to be crushed or torn before planting. Place the whole pot in the ground and the roots will continue to grow right through the pot wall. Studies found within 3 months, 88% of the CowPot degrades in the soil.
How quick do biodegradable pots degrade?
As a biodegradable planter, CowPots will begin to break down within weeks of transplanting. As long as they are completely buried at planting, they should be almost completely decomposed by the end of the growing season. The rate of decomposition depends largely on moisture and bioactivity in your soil. Biodegradable pots are designed to degrade both in the garden or in a patio container.
Which CowPot should I use?
Visit our product specification page to see a condensed description of each style of our biodegradable pots and their suggested growing applications. The #3 and #4 styles along with the 10 row tray are best suited for seed starting. The #5, #6 and #7 styles are great for step up transplants and plants requiring more soil volume.
Do you make other styles?
Our online store lists each of the 15 styles of biodegradable pots we currently manufacture. If you are interested in other styles, find out more about customization. If you are looking for volume discounts for large quantities beyond the pricing listed for our wholesale pots, contact us.
Can roots grow through biodegradable pots?
Absolutely, yes. CowPots have porous pot walls that allow for unrestricted root penetration. Your plants will never be root bound in a CowPot. These roots then benefit from air pruning as they are exposed to the outer edges of the pot walls.
