Tips for using CowPots for seed-starting

This time of year, we often get questions about best practices for starting your seeds with CowPots. We’ve been using them for almost two decades in our family’s greenhouses, so we are eager to help with your growing endeavors!

Bottom watering/overwatering: CowPots can be bottom watered as long as you let the water dry up and the pot dry out in between waterings. If the pot is constantly wet, it will begin to degrade prematurely. Pots starting to mold? Don’t be alarmed! Learn about CowPots decomposition here.

Using heat mats: CowPots can definitely sit on a heat mat without an issue! One thing you will have to be mindful of is that as the seedling gets established, the roots will grow through the pot and can begin to weave into the material of your heat mat.

Step-up transplanting: If your plant needs to be transplanted before it’s time to move outdoors, you can absolutely step up a planted CowPot into a larger container without removing or tearing the pot. The roots will continue to grow through the pot walls, uninterrupted.
